The following morning, Bingley went to London to see to several business matters. Darcy was awake early enough to see him off.
âI hate to go. I would not, if it was not so important.â He sighed and dropped into a chair, his gaze drifting to the ceiling. Darcy suspected he was seeing something other than the gold-flecked plaster decorations. âWas not the ball wonderful? Miss Bennet was perfection. She always isâso gentle and-and caringâbut last night, she was especially lovely. I have never met a lady like her.â
Darcy resisted the temptation to roll his eyes. He would have, if he did not suspect Bingleyâs feelings were more than a passing fancy. âDo you intend to offer for her?â
Bingley jerked as though surprised by the sound of Darcyâs voice. âEh? Oh, right. Yes. I mean, absolutely.â His eyes implored Darcy, âDo you think she will accept me? She will, will she not? I think she likes me. She seems to.â
âShe gives every indication of returning your affection, from what I have seen.â When I have not been studying her sister, that is.
A broad, unseeing grin covered Bingleyâs face. âDo you know, I believe I knew the moment I met her that I would ask her to be my wife.â
He sighed loudly and dramatically enough that Darcy almost recommended he seek a role on the stage.
Scratching the back of his neck, Bingley faced Darcy and asked, âTell me, Darcy, what is your opinion? Caroline and Louisa like Miss Bennet, yet I fear they will not be pleased. They will say I should marry a lady with connexions and a large fortune. I always thought I would, but then I met my darlingââ
Darcy could not bear to hear him speak about Miss Bennetâs beauty, a subject Bingley had bored him with quite enough since they came into Hertfordshire. âOnly you know what will bring you happiness. Miss Bennet is an estimable woman. If you are fortunate enough to win her hand, then I shall be the first to wish you joy.â
Bingley grinned. âI knew I could count on you.â The hall clock chimed, and Bingley leapt to his feet. âIs that the time? I really should go. I will be back soon. A couple of days. As quickly as I can. Do you want to come with me? I know you do not long for my sistersâ or Hurstâs company.â He screwed up his features. âBut here you can ride, and it is very pretty countryside, andââ
âYou will return in two or three daysâ time?â
Bingley nodded.
âVery good. I shall see you then.â
